TONE & NICHE
Press:
Tone & Niche By Nick Brandon GO & DO Editor July, 2006
The members: Tone & Niche is comprised of Anthony Retka (guitar/vocals) and Nicole Varga (violin), both Detroit-based artists. Joining the duo live is bassist Chris Bober and drummer Stuart Tucker.
The history: Five years ago, the musical partnership of Retka and Varga formed, each bringing a formally trained background to the creative table — Nicole has a music degree from Wayne State University, while Anthony is a current student at Macomb Community College.
The last year and a half has been particularly fruitful for Tone and Niche, gigging across the U.S. including Nashville, Chicago and Cleveland, sharing the bill with Martha Wainwright and other national acts.
What's up with the name: “My name is Anthony, and my friends always called me Tone,” said Retka. “Nicole was always called Niche by her friends in college.
“When we needed a name we decided to use our nicknames thus, Tone & Niche.”
The style: Blending pop and rock with a singer/songwriter style of focused song crafting, Tone & Niche cite The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Thom Yorke and Duke Ellington as influences.
Got anything recorded? In 2004, Tone & Niche released On the Streets Of, its debut full-length, and followed it one year later with the Song One EP.
The brand new EP From Your Hands, featuring three new tracks, along with Retka’s self-titled, ‘03 solo record is also part of the Tone & Niche catalogue — all discs are available via the group’s official Web site found at www.toneandniche.com.
Tell us your future? Tone & Niche has completed enough material for a double disc, due out sometime in this year — it will feature lots of new songs, as well as some re-worked versions of some old tunes. One-disc will specialize in the band’s pop/rock style, the other including more Gershwin-esque, instrumental ideas.
